whereas the video for “pyramid song” was surreal, the video for “house of cards” is elemental. Most of the time, it’s just yorke’s face, and it recalls nothing so much as the cover of the bends. circles have been completed; this is a message of peace.

Well, peace insomuch as a song can stand for such a thing when its scare-quote-climax consists of the simple refrain: “denial.” It’s then we see silhouettes of people being social (even…partying?) —- but don’t they know the infrastructure is collapsing? in the interfering static, two faces blink in and out, almost as if they can see, hear, even feel each other across space and over the din.

ten years ago, radiohead were fearful and angry; in 2001 they were fearful and panicky; in 2003 they were panicky and angry. Today, they are mournful and calm. Love and loving is still possible after all; denial will have to be forgiven.
